line graph, IELTS, Writing Task 1 Academic, radio television UK
Sample Answer 1
(195 words)

The given line graph depicts the percentage of inhabitants of the United Kingdom, over 4 years of age, who watched television and listened to the radio over the course of a day from October 1992 to December 1992.

The lowest number of listeners for radio was after midnight when they started dropping, touching a minimum of below 5% at around 2 am. In contrast, the minimum for television viewing was at 6 am when it was at 0%. Interestingly, the percentage of radio audiences never dropped to zero at any time throughout the 24-hour period.

Conversely, there was a huge difference in the highest number of audiences for the two media being compared. Television viewership peaked at a little below 50%, whereas the maximum percentage that the radio auditors reach was approximately 30% of the UK population. A striking feature is that both these peaks were at about 8, but it was in the evening for television viewers and in the morning for radio listeners. Moreover, the percentage of television and radio audiences among the UK populace was only similar at around 2 am (below 5%) and around 2 pm (approximately 15%).

Sample Answer 2
(188 words)

The line chart illustrates how many people in the United Kingdom, who were over 4, used television or radio as a mode of entertainment between October and December 1992.

Overall, television was preferred in the evening and radio in the morning by the inhabitants of the UK.

The television viewership was 0% at 6 in the morning, saw a few ups and downs till 2 pm when it was at almost 20%, and then increased steadily, hitting a peak of almost 50% in the evening around 8. As time progressed, the number of inhabitants of the UK who watched television kept decreasing gradually, reaching below 5% at 2 am.

On the other hand, the figures for radio listeners were a little less than 10% at the start of the day at 6 in the morning. A steep rise was observed till 8 am when the radio auditors were at a maximum of approximately 30%. From 8 in the morning, these numbers were at a downward trend till 2 pm. After a slight increase for the next two hours, the decrease in these figures continued till 2 in the morning.

Notes
The graph and the question are sourced from Cambridge books. The answers, however, have all been written by me and are not copied from anywhere.
There is no one right way to answer the IELTS writing tasks, and that is what I have tried to convey by writing more than one sample answer.

The first sample answer in this case focuses on the highest and lowest figures. Besides describing the minimum and the maximum, two important features are mentioned. One, that the radio audiences are never zero and second, that 8 is the time for reaching the peak.

The second sample focuses on TV first, and then radio. The increase and decrease in the line graph are described a little more in detail as compared to the first sample answer.
