The culture of consumerism (Part 3--IELTS Speaking)
Question:
Why do many people today keep buying things which they do not need? (Question from Cambridge IELTS Book 15)
Sample Answer 1:
It is just a reflection of the society that we live in. There are too many choices, so one may buy more and more things for variety. Also, sometimes, the only reason is to show off how many things one owns. Owning things has become a status symbol.
Question:
Do you believe the benefits of a consumer society outweigh the disadvantages? (Question from Cambridge IELTS Book 15)
Sample Answer 1 (Yes):
I think so. As a result of consumerism, there are more choices. So, we get great deals and discounts because of competition. Also, since people buy more, it is beneficial for the economy. There may be some issues with spending more than required but I feel that it is a result of people having more disposable income. And so, there is nothing wrong with splurging once in a while.
Sample Answer 1 (No):
Not at all. I think consumerism has had a highly detrimental effect on everyone. The core issue is that people now focus on the wrong things in life--they always did to some extent but it has gone out of control now. Rather than focusing on relationships and experiences, most people place more importance on material things.
It is also extremely bad for the environment. The more things we consume, the more we harm the environment.
And on an individual level, there is a wastage of money because of senseless spending.
Sample Answer 3 (It depends/Not sure):
Well, I'm not sure. Consumer culture certainly gives us more choices and is, therefore, good for businesses and the economy. But then it is bad for the environment. And the priorities have become all skewed because of consumerism, especially in the case of the younger generation.
Question:
How possible is it to avoid the culture of consumerism? (Question from Cambridge IELTS Book 15)
Sample Answer 1:
I'd like to believe that it is very possible. All that is required is to think beyond material things and focus on true happiness. Having said that, I do realise that this may sound simple but it is easier said than done.
