Advantages/Pros of Telecommuting/Working from home

  • An additional saving for employees is that they do not have to spend on formal office wear.

  • Employees have a greater degree of control over their work environment.

Disadvantages/Cons of Telecommuting/Working from home
  • There may be more distractions at home, e.g., family members including children, pets, and roommates. Also, being in an environment with a lot of non-work chores, the chances of being distracted or procrastinating escalate.
  • Distractions or lack of focus are also more probable in other locations such as a coffee shop.
  • When working from home, employees may find it difficult to distance themselves from work at the end of the day. So, it can be counterproductive by skewing up the work-life balance.
  • Monitoring/supervising employees is not possible as well, even though technology does help ensure that the employer is working or logged into the system.
  • Employees may take undue advantage of the fact that they can work on their own schedule without any constant monitoring.
  • One huge problem with remote working is that there is no opportunity for social meetings. Working in an office does not just involve employees working in the office. It also involves many interactions among employees such as short coffee breaks. These social interactions help forge a better bond and understanding among employees. They are also an inadvertent source of destressing for the employees in the middle of stressful workdays.
  • Communicating through only technology may lead to communication gaps, thereby increasing issues among employees, and also between employer and employee.
  • Working from home requires a proper working space and environment. This may be inconvenient for certain employees and their families.
     
Hybrid mode of working
  • The hybrid mode/Hybrid workplace model involves working from the office/traditional workplace for some days and working from home or outside the office on other days.
  • It offers flexibility to the employees.
  • It combines the benefits of both remote working and in-office working.
  • It is beneficial for co-workers to meet periodically.
  • It also offers an opportunity for the employees to touch base with the employers in person whenever they visit the office.
