Advantages of wearing a uniform (in offices; in schools/educational institutes; in non-office environments such as factories)
- It establishes a uniform equal environment
- It results in an atmosphere of discipline and uniformity
- Wearing a uniform helps ensure that inappropriate clothes are not worn. This is not only helpful in schools but also at work.
This is especially helpful when the employee has to interact with the public in the course of their work. - If the employee's work involves public dealing, such as working in a departmental store or fast food outlet, the customers can identify the staff member immediately and ask any queries that they may have.
- Also, the employee looks presentable.
- A social leveller
No judgement/bullying/harassment because of the clothes worn by employees - Ensures that the employees focus on their work rather than on their own and others' clothes. After all, it saves the employees from the dilemma of deciding 'what to wear' every day.
- In certain places such as factories, wearing a uniform ensures the safety of the workers.
- It leaves a positive impression of discipline and cleanliness.
- A uniform/dress code is important as it conveys the 'tone' of the company
- Some accessories, such as certain kinds of jewellery, may be deemed inappropriate in certain environments. Rather than listing out everything that should not be worn, it is more pragmatic to establish a dress code or have a uniform.
Disadvantages of wearing a uniform
- It may be monotonous to wear the same clothes every single day.
- It has often been observed that uniforms are uncomfortable and impractical. They may be pleasing to look at but that is certainly not enough for clothes that employees are expected to wear every day while working.
How these disadvantages can be avoided
- by ensuring that the uniform is designed by keeping the type of work in mind and not just the aesthetics.
- by welcoming suggestions from the employees/students about the design, colour, etc. of the uniform. After all, they are the ones who are supposed to wear these uniforms for long hours.
