A question that is often asked regarding IELTS essays is whether one should write about both viewpoints and just one viewpoint. It depends on the question, but as a rule, writing about both viewpoints makes for better writing. Also, the more variety of things that you write about, the better would be the vocabulary that you use in your essay.

I have used this question to write three essays: one in which I have written about both positives and negatives, another with only positives, and the third one with only negatives.

Any of them would work in your IELTS test although the preferred method should always be to write about both sides and then conclude depending on which side has stronger points or which side has more points.

Sample Essay #1

(Both negatives and positives mentioned)

In the last couple of decades, the scale of the celebrations during marriage ceremonies has been expanding at an unprecedented rate. This is a reflection of the society we live in and I personally believe that it is an overall beneficial trend.

The key reason for the grand nuptial festivities is that an increasing number of individuals have higher disposable income than ever before. This amount is splurged on a variety of things including throwing of huge parties when one ties the knot.  Moreover, this practice of lavish and exorbitant spending is a result of the consumerist social environment that we live in, where both acquiring material possessions and showing off of one’s riches are used to impress others. It is a sad reality of our times that an individual is usually respected for what he owns rather than the kind of person he is.

The primary advantage of having elaborate wedding festivities is that these are an excuse for extended family and old friends to meet and enjoy. This has gained an increased significance in today’s fast-paced lifestyle. Another factor that makes these grand affairs a boon is that it gives a boost to the economy as it provides employment in large numbers.

On the other hand, this burgeoning tendency of lavish marriage ceremonies can be problematic if the host spends more than one can afford. Since sometimes such grand parties are organized to maintain a certain social status, people sometimes go beyond their means to give the impression to others that they are more affluent than they actually are.

In conclusion, the surging expenditure on material goods and celebratory events of all kinds are caused by the changes in society. In my opinion, it is an advantageous trend for individuals as well as the economy so long as the hosts stay within their means when planning such events.

Sample Essay #2

(Only positives mentioned)

In present times, an increasing amount of money is spent during the parties and functions held when a couple ties the knot. This is a reflection of the society we live in and I strongly believe it is a beneficial trend.

The key reason for the grand nuptial festivities is that an increasing number of individuals have higher disposable income than ever before. This amount is splurged on a variety of things including throwing of huge parties when one ties the knot.

The primary advantage of having elaborate wedding festivities is that these are an excuse for extended family and old friends to meet and enjoy. This has gained an increased significance in today’s fast-paced lifestyle. In my own personal experience, the only time I have met most of my school and college friends has been when they got married and chose to throw a big bash. This is all the more important in today’s globalized world when many of our friends and family do not even live in the same continent. Another factor that makes these grand affairs a boon is that it gives a boost to the economy as it provides employment in large numbers.

In conclusion, the surging expenditure on material goods and celebratory events of all kinds are caused by the changes in society. In my opinion, it is an advantageous trend for individuals as well as the economy. I strongly believe there is no adverse impact of the burgeoning trend of lavish marriage ceremonies; hence, these should be encouraged and enjoyed.

Sample Essay #3

(Only negatives mentioned)

Nowadays, the wedding celebrations are becoming grander and more money is being spent on it as compared to the past. This is a reflection of the society we live in and I strongly believe it is an adverse trend.

This burgeoning tendency of lavish marriage ceremonies is problematic because the host usually spends more than they can afford. Since such grand parties are organized to exhibit/showcase a certain social status, people end up going beyond their means to give the impression to others that they are more affluent than they actually are. What is worse, in my experience, most of the guests are more interested in criticizing the arrangements and the one another. As a result, it cannot be argued that the elaborate wedding festivities bring an excuse to bring family and friends together.

In conclusion, the surging expenditure on material goods and celebratory events of all kinds are caused by the changes in society. In my opinion, it is detrimental to individuals as well as society. I strongly believe that there are no positives to this trend of overspending and focusing one’s life on material possessions. Not only is this attitude bad for one’s finances but it can also lead to mental health issues in the long run.
