Sample Essay # 1
With every passing year, the number of languages in the world is decreasing as many are becoming extinct. One viewpoint regarding this is that it is not concerning the fewer the number of languages, the easier our life would be. However, I do not fully agree with this opinion.

Those who advocate the benefits of fewer tongues do have a valid argument. It is an undeniable fact that the primary purpose of a language is communication. A decrease in the number of languages means ease of communication. This, in turn, facilitates international business, travelling, etc. Therefore, elimination of language barriers aids globlisation.

On the other hand, it is important to consider that languages are not just about communication. Firstly, languages are carriers of our traditions, be it folk songs and tales or the many cultural rituals. Moreover, the native languages are usually intricately connected to religious and ethnic identities. The native speakers usually have a sense of pride and an emotional attachment with their language which should not be undermined. Lastly, language diversity is also a source of employment as interpreters and translators will not be needed if there is only one universal language.

In conclusion, I do agree that communication would be less complicated and fewer languages may reduce certain cultural barriers. Also, people can communicate across the globe without using translators in this case. However, in my opinion, these conveniences are also possible if one is bilingual or multilingual. Therefore, I believe bilingualism or multilingualism is a better option.

Sample Essay # 2
Linguistic diversity has been one of the features of human race since time immemorial. However, now more and more languages cease to exist with every passing year. As people of various regions interact more, the need for having a lingua franca leads to gradual extinction of certain languages.

It is a contentious subject whether these languages should be protected. After all, it is a valid argument that the fewer the number of languages, the easier the communication. This ease of communication not only aids globalisation in every which way but it also facilitates the working of governments. After all, if there are multiple languages within a country, the government would need to spend taxpayers’ funds for accommodating all the languages in the official work and advertisements.

However, what needs to be discussed is that language is more than a mere mode of communication. Over centuries, it also becomes a flagbearer of the identity of a community or a tribe. Within its words are held the history, the literature, the folk songs, and the struggles which are lost forever with the loss of the language. I am not negating the fact that extinction of certain languages is inevitable. But I strongly believe that it is not a positive outcome of the modern development.

Nothing can be done for what has happened but measures should be taken to revive where possible and if not possible, preserve the moribund languages. The fact is that certain dead languages such as Latin are still taught which strongly supports the need to preserve languages. I opine that the way forward is for everyone to be either bilingual or multilingual, preferably the latter. As important as modernisation is, we cannot celebrate the loss of heritage of some, however small their number may be.

Sample Essay # 3
Language plays a pivotal role in effective communication among people since it helps to express thoughts, feelings, and emotions in a better way. There are certain languages which are becoming more prevalent across the globe leading to other languages becoming obsolete.

Advocates of fewer languages propose the argument that having lesser number of languages will help to make life easier. Secondly, it will offer a cosmopolitan outlook where majority of the people across the globe speak only the prevalent languages.

However, this is only one side of the coin. The major drawback of such a phenomenon would be that communication will get restricted to a particular group of people who know that language. For instance, the elderly population may not be familiar the language and may feel outcast. Secondly, it is a fact that variety is the spice of life. With only few languages to speak, this inherent variety in human society will diminish. Thirdly, this will also lead to a dearth of desire to learn new languages. Furthermore, if such a trend continues, valuable ancient knowledge which has been preserved in scriptures will not be relayed to the next generation.

In my opinion, it is essential to have a variety of languages and to preserve these languages to have a vibrant society. This will also help to have a society where people are able to communicate freely and easily without having the need to resort to some special tools such as machine translators or online converters.
